GREETINGS FROM COOGEE: STREETON INSPIRED
Greetings
from Coogee: Streeton Inspired brings together a fascinating collection
of work inspired by Coogee Beach. It was the initiative of arts patron
and dealer Marlene Antico who saw the art historical potential of
revisiting one of Australia’s most sacred landscapes sites. It was the
place where the likes of Australian Impressionists Arthur Streeton,
Charles Condor and Tom Roberts visited to paint some of the country’s
most iconic en-plein air seascapes. Unlike the cosmopolitan
centre that Coogee is today it was a settlement of a few hundred
people, who came to fish, cut timber from the bush or track
kangaroos. The tram line from Sydney had opened only a few years
before and the village was constantly filled with day
trippers.
The current exhibition showcases work from landscape artists, Tom Carment, Michael Ramsden, Chris Antico, David van Nunen, Joanna Logue, Neil Taylor, Suey Mc Ennally and photographer Paul Green.
The project began with an artists’ picnic in March 2008 at Dunningham
Reserve on the headland above Coogee Beach, opposite the site of
Streeton’s famous painting Sunlight Sweet Coogee. The artists
subsequently revisited the site in the process of creating their range
of work for the exhibition.
A floor talk by the eminent artist and academic, Ian Grant will be given on Saturday 17th from 3-4pm. |

"Any
images of Coogee made in 2008 would necessarily be a lot different to
those of Roberts and Conder’s time. The site itself is very different
and so are approaches to imaging – both in terms of media and style.
However, what is constant in making images of any place is the need for
insight, consideration, skill and imagination. The participating
artists, all well known and respected, have each brought these
qualities to their particular way of imaging Coogee."
