Artist Statement
MORNING
These works were inspired by time spent at
the artist-in-residence program at the Bundanon Trust (Arthur and Yvonne Boyd),
on the Shoalhaven River, South Coast NSW. I would like to acknowledge the
support of the Trust and the staff at Bundanon. Also I would like to thank
Marlene Antico for her continuing support.
Life on the farm that surrounds the studios
starts early. It is spring 2008 but the early mornings are still cool and foggy
on the low farmland next to the river. Each morning I am up early to watch the
sun rise over the mountains and across the valley.
In recent years my work has been about the
way the evening light transforms the urban landscape. This time it is the
morning light that has captivated my interest, and how strong and harsh it is
compared to the urban evenings that I am familiar with. Each morning the light
enters the sky, firstly the clouds would light up then slowly the mist closer
to the ground would start to glow. It is the emotive experience evoked in the
continually shifting light that motivates this series of works.
